Here the song is sequenced as version #1 but the CD source is for version #2, which I prefer. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Ticket to Ride | The Beatles |
![]() Ticket to Ride CD Source: Help! (UK/half Soundtrack) (mono+stereo)Time: 3:03 Sequenced by: single Honored by: RS DM DG According to Bruce Spizer, the song`s title is a pun on the town of Ryde, off England`s coast on the Isle of Wight. When the song was first released as a single, the movie "Help!" had yet to be named after the song that had yet to be written. Instead, the 45`s label read, "From the United Artists Release `Eight Arms To Hold You`," which was the movie`s working title. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

May | Gloria | Them |
![]() Gloria CD Source: The Story of (1964-66+) (2)Time: 2:35 Sequenced by: single Honored by: RS DM DG Van Morrison`s "Gloria" became so well known over the years that it`s strange to think how few people heard it in spring 1965 when Them`s original version barely scraped the bottom of the national charts for one week. A year later "Gloria" was covered by The Shadows of Knight, whose version made it to the national top 10. Them`s version was re-released but didn`t really compete at that time. Now hardly anyone remembers the cover version! The cover was contrived to "clean up" the horny urgency of the original so it wouldn`t be banned by some radio stations, notably WLS in Chicago. As you can hear in the samples, a key lyric was changed from "She comes to my room" to "She calls out my name." Sample 2: Gloria - The Shadows of Knight ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Respect | Otis Redding |
![]() Respect CD Source: OTIS! The Definitive (1960-67) (4)Time: 2:08 Sequenced by: single Honored by: DM Otis Redding`s original version of "Respect," a plea from a traveling man for his woman to treat him right "when I come home," is a top-drawer Stax-Volt song with a typically strong arrangement and vocal. However, as Redding famously said, "that little girl done stole it from me." Aretha Franklin`s cover, with an even better arrangement, a few pointed changes in lyrics, and a bravura vocal performance, achieved one of the great pop recordings of the century. Often called a feminist anthem, Aretha isn`t pleading for respect, she`s declaring and demanding what she deserves, including sexual satisfaction. May | Respect | Aretha Franklin |
![]() Respect CD Source: The Very Best of, Vol. 1 (1967-69)Time: 2:23 Sequenced by: single Honored by: RS DM DG Otis Redding`s original version of "Respect," a plea from a traveling man for his woman to treat him right "when I come home," is a top-drawer Stax-Volt song with a typically strong arrangement and vocal. I Can`t Stand Up (For Falling Down) | Sam & Dave |
![]() I Can`t Stand Up (For Falling Down) CD Source: Take Me To The River - Southern Soul (1961-77) (3)Time: 2:40 Sequenced by: B-side of Soothe Me single Honored by: Elvis Costello covered this Sam & Dave version on his "Get Happy!!" LP and also released the song as a single. Costello`s version is fast and urgent, while the original is a great slow burner in the inimitable Sam & Dave style which never appeared on an album until the CD reissue era. Listeners might be excused if they didn`t recognize that these are two versions of the same song, so great is Costello`s transformation of the mood and arrangement of the original. Although cover versions are often put down as pale imitations, each of these is a standout recording on its own terms. I Heard It Through the Grapevine | Marvin Gaye |
![]() I Heard It Through the Grapevine CD Source: Complete Motown Singles Vol. 8: 1968 (6)Time: 3:11 Sequenced by: single Honored by: RS DM DG An amazing song, with great lyrics, a superb vocal performance, and an unforgettable sound. As heard in the mono mix, the music`s bottom end is urgent and commanding - an insistent fusion of drums and bass driving the song relentlessly as Marvin`s voice plus strings, horns, and background vocals soar and dance above. In contrast, the stereo mix presents drums on the left and just about everything else on the right, spreading out the sound horizontally. The result is still exciting to hear - how could it not be? But the spatial split of drums and bass neuters the heartbeat of this recording, sacrificing one of its greatest virtues. (Nevertheless, as a foregone conclusion, most younger listeners prefer to hear stereo over mono versions of all vintage recordings.) The stereo mix clocks about 4:30, famously ending with "I`ve got blisters on my fingers!" The mono mix comes to an apparent end at 3:08 and then continues with a heavy riff, fading by 3:39. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() I Want To Take You Higher CD Source: Classic Rock 1969: The Beat Goes OnTime: 3:02 Sequenced by: single Honored by: "I Want to Take You Higher" became an anthem after its unforgettable performance at the Woodstock festival. It was first released as a single on the B-side of "Stand!" two weeks prior to the release of the "Stand!" album in April 1969. At that time it gained little traction, charting weakly on its own 6 weeks later. "Higher" was then re-issued as a single in late spring 1970 when the Woodstock movie and soundtrack were released. At that time, competing singles by Sly & The Family Stone and by Ike & Tina Turner diluted each other`s chart success. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The ten-second Clyde Stubblefield drum solo at the end of Part 2 is claimed to be the most-sampled musical element in all of hip-hop. Public Enemy used it as part of its basic rhythm track throughout "Fight The Power." Chuck D. says "sound of the Funky Drummer" about 12 seconds into this excerpt. Once you`ve listened to the drum solo a few times it`s easier to isolate it from the other elements of "Fight The Power`s" rhythm track. Sample 2: Funky Drummer sampled part ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
