![]() Sunshine of Your Love CD Source: History of British Rock (1962-72) (9)Time: 3:00 Sequenced by: Disraeli Gears album Honored by: RS DG "Sunshine of Your Love" was a top 10 hit single during the summer of 1968, but it first made a splash when the Disraeli Gears album was released late in 1967. This CD source is the only one I know for the mono single version. I prefer hearing the drums and guitar together, not widely separated, even at the expense of Clapton`s guitar solo. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It was not released on an album until about two years later, however, when it reached its widest audience on "The History of Otis Redding," a greatest-hits album that climbed to the Billboard pop top 10 in tandem with the great success of the "Dock of the Bay" single. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I Heard It Through the Grapevine | Marvin Gaye |
![]() I Heard It Through the Grapevine CD Source: Complete Motown Singles Vol. 8: 1968 (6)Time: 3:11 Sequenced by: single Honored by: RS DM DG An amazing song, with great lyrics, a superb vocal performance, and an unforgettable sound. As heard in the mono mix, the music`s bottom end is urgent and commanding - an insistent fusion of drums and bass driving the song relentlessly as Marvin`s voice plus strings, horns, and background vocals soar and dance above. In contrast, the stereo mix presents drums on the left and just about everything else on the right, spreading out the sound horizontally. The result is still exciting to hear - how could it not be? But the spatial split of drums and bass neuters the heartbeat of this recording, sacrificing one of its greatest virtues. (Nevertheless, as a foregone conclusion, most younger listeners prefer to hear stereo over mono versions of all vintage recordings.) Helter Skelter | The Beatles |
![]() Helter Skelter CD Source: The Beatles (White Album) (2) (mono)Time: 3:39 Sequenced by: The Beatles (aka The White Album) Honored by: One of the greatest differences between mono and stereo mixes of all Beatles songs is "Helter Skelter." The stereo mix clocks about 4:30, famously ending with "I`ve got blisters on my fingers!" The mono mix comes to an apparent end at 3:08 and then continues with a heavy riff, fading by 3:39. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I Want To Take You Higher | Sly & The Family Stone |
![]() I Want To Take You Higher CD Source: Classic Rock 1969: The Beat Goes OnTime: 3:02 Sequenced by: single Honored by: "I Want to Take You Higher" became an anthem after its unforgettable performance at the Woodstock festival. It was first released as a single on the B-side of "Stand!" two weeks prior to the release of the "Stand!" album in April 1969. At that time it gained little traction, charting weakly on its own 6 weeks later. "Higher" was then re-issued as a single in late spring 1970 when the Woodstock movie and soundtrack were released. At that time, competing singles by Sly & The Family Stone and by Ike & Tina Turner diluted each other`s chart success. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
