What General Features are covered in this FAQ?

This FAQ covers Registration, Search, browser issues, and site-wide miscellaney.

Why should I Register?

Visitors who don't register can read everything on the Alley and enjoy the interactive features of the Timeline and CD Database, but they can't create anything or actively participate in the Cat community. You must register and Log In to post Comments, to post your own Lists, to have your own Profile, and to see other Cats' Profiles. Comments, Lists, and Profiles have their own FAQs.

How do I Search for song, album, and artist names?

Both the Timeline and the CD Database have their own specialized Search systems for finding Timeline songs and artists or CD Database albums and artists. The main Search function on the top menu bar will find everything else on the Alley, including all articles, lists, comments, other pages (Bits & Pieces, FAQ, etc.), and Timeline commentaries that contain the key word(s) you enter. Although it will not find Timeline songs or artists, or CD Database titles or artists, the main Search function will find comments about songs, albums, and artists.

You can also Search for Tags associated with articles or lists in the sidebar of the Blog page. The same Search is done whether initiated from the top menu bar or the Blog page Search for Tags. Tag links at the bottom of articles and lists do not initiate a general search; they merely find other articles or lists with that tag.

Will "tabbed browsing" always work?

"Tabbed browsing" is generally a very good idea on this site. There are lots of times when you may want to have several windows open at once and will find it much easier to use tabs. However, here are two exceptions to keep in mind:

(1) All steps in the Comment process depend on using pop-up windows on the same page, and are designed to return you to that page at the end of the process. If out of habit you use a new tab or new window key by mistake, you will get a browser error message. In that event, use the browser back arrow to return to the previous page.

(2) Any time you do a Search the result will appear on the same page you did the search from. (You are not following a link.)

How do I get an RSS feed?

Click on the RSS icon at the upper right corner of the Home Page.

What do I need to know about AddThis buttons?

To facilitate the sharing of articles and lists through social networks, we provide the popular AddThis buttons at the end of each article and list. Rock 'n Soul Alley does not collect visitor information on its own behalf that prompts privacy concerns; however, anyone's use of AddThis buttons does allow third-party sites to collect "anonymous" information about the user that you may want to know more about. If so, please consult our Privacy page.

What are permalinks?

Because websites are reorganized from time to time, the path to particular pieces of content may sometimes get broken or lost, rendering that content irretrievable. To remedy this problem, we provide a URL to articles and lists on this site that does not depend on what path is followed to get to it; in other words, a "permanent" link.
