In no way is my love for doo wop just about nostalgia. Like any music one grows up with, there is always some element of nostalgia to be tapped into. But dozens of doo wop songs are still in heavy rotation for me because of their inherent musical virtues: great vocal group arrangements and performances that capture timeless emotions and are always fun to sing and dance along with.

I've loved listening to Clyde McPhatter's voice from the moment I first
heard it, late in 1958, on his biggest solo hit, "A Lover's Question."
Here's a synopsis of his impact and influence:
In the summer of 1951, The Dominoes' swaggering "Sixty-Minute Man" enjoyed over three months at #1 on the R&B charts and even made it into the top 20 on the pop charts. Bill Brown, a bass vocalist, sang the lead. Soaring on top of the vocal arrangement was the unmistakeable gospel tenor... (more)

Rock and soul music (and their precursors) were the dominant styles of
pop music from the mid-1950s at least through the early 1980s, creating
a strong sense of historical continuity in the music and among music
fans and critics. In retrospect, it makes sense to refer to these years
as the Age of Rock and Soul
or the Rock and Soul
Era.
To be sure, both rock and soul music took flight in many new directions during the 1970s, including hard rock,... (more)

I'm convinced that for most people, most of the time, the experience of
listening to (rock and soul) music in the 21st century is essentially
different than it was back in the day. I'd love to know your thoughts.
For me, the whole listening experience is different in so many ways that I hardly know where to start. Here's a quick summary of six differences that stand out to me. Each one is linked to its own discussion thread for your comments.

Much of the best music of the last three decades has come from
experiments with rhythm and sound at the expense of melody and harmony.
Another blog article, How Music Listening Has Changed, makes the broader claim that music listening is essentially different now than it was back in the day. That article calls out six reasons, including less melody and harmony. Here is where to discuss the claim about melody and harmony.... (more)

The title of this article is a 1979 song by The Buggles which
was the first video to be played on MTV in North America at 12:10 a.m.
on August 1, 1981. How prophetic it turned out to be!
The claim: 24/7 TV and internet video marketing has supplanted listeners' imagination and subverted the meaning of music into brand and lifestyle choices.
